Life is not about what happens to you, but how you react.
Respond to this statement in regards to the episode.
This statement applies very well to Supernatural’s episode ‘Home’. Many things in the Winchesters life
could be different in the Winchesters’ lives if different choices had been
made.
Mary was killed by something in the first episode of the
series, and the events that took place in the few weeks after that are briefly
talked about by one of John’s old friends. We learn that John started claiming
that something killed Mary and began reading ‘strange old books’. There was
nothing that could have stopped Mary dying but John did not have to react in
the way he did. He could have grieved her death then moved on, maybe even
marrying again or at least settling down somewhere to raise his children. Sam
might have been on better terms with him because of their ‘normal’ life and
Dean would be quite different (which we see in the second season’s episode,
‘What Is and What Should Never Be’).
Dean could have dealt with Sam’s revelation about his powers
in a very different way. He could have left his brother there and then and gone
his own way, he could have decided to leave the case to figure out what was
going on, or he could have been ecstatic with the fact that Sam had the ability
to do something. Any of these reactions would change the course of things, but
no matter what, it was going to happen.
It is a funny to me, this statement, I heard it a lot as a teenager. Only now as an adult do I see the truth in it. When you discuss John Winchester's choices you hit the nail on the head. As to what would or would not happen, that is harder to pinpoint, but it makes for interesting conversation.
